Spam Links Index > Filter > Client Side Spam Filters
To link to this page use: http://spamlinks.net/filter-client.htm
Read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page if you haven't a clue what you are doing.
Client side spam filters are used with your mail client rather than working on the mail server. They are generally a less effective means of filtering spam on a large scale, but are useful if your ISP either cannot filter all of their spam or refuse to. Some client side filters will work with any mail client whereas others are built as plugins for a particular program.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Some programs are starting to use a "fake bounce" feature, to pretend to bounce email back to the address the spam is supposed to have come from. PLEASE DO NOT USE THESE. The "from" address is easily forged and will likely be an innocent third party; the spammer won't remove you from their list.
To learn more about spam filtering technology see the Filtering Frequently Asked Questions.
Read more here.
Acting much like many email virus scanners, these programs sit between your mail client and your POP3 server.

DNS Blackhole Lists (DNSBLs) provide a database which can be queried by
DNS,
which is useful primarily for server side applications but are now being
utilised in client side implementations.
Blacklists offer a variety of lists of servers, domains, email addresses
and content, which a client side filter might utilise.
